Light shoes are different for girls and boys but are the first types of shoes a dancer will invest in.
For girls, the light shoes are called Pombs. Also known as soft shoes, they make no noise when used to dance and allow flexible quick movements of the feet.
Pombs are made of soft black leather and can have a full or split sole. They crisscross lace up the girl's foot and are wrapped around the ankle and secured with a small bow. Pombs should fit snugly to your foot but still be comfortable. Remember, your pombs will stretch with the heat of your foot so a good rule of thumb is not to buy more than half a size bigger than your 'everyday' shoes. Pombs are meant feel as though you are wearing no shoes at all.
Boys light shoes are more structured and have a heel to them. Boys shoes are designed to be able to 'click' the heels together while still allowing some flexibility for the feet. They are a full shoe with a more structured sole than the girls pombs.
