What is a feis?

Pronounced: Feis [FeSH] (like fish with an ‘e’)

Plural: Feiseanna [FeSHanna]

A feis is an opportunity for dancers of a like age and grade to compete against each other in an open arena. Feis is an irish word and when translated means ‘festival’.

The feis often has live musicians and will most definitely have a live audience.

Dancers at a feis represent their own dance class and can travel from all over the world to participate.

Be sure to read the feis tips if attending your first one, it’ll make it a more enjoyable event!

Lastly

A feis is a fluid organisation that needs to be flexible to the crowds that arrive. Times are approximate and of best intention. Be patient with the staff as they are usually there as volunteers.

Celebrate your successes but remember that it is not about winning, it is about taking part.
