What is a feis?

Pronounced: Feis [FeSH] (like fish with an ‘e’)

Plural: Feiseanna [FeSHanna]

A feis is an opportunity for dancers of a like age and grade to compete against each other in an open arena. Feis is an irish word and when translated means ‘festival’.

The feis often has live musicians and will most definitely have a live audience.

Dancers at a feis represent their own dance class and can travel from all over the world to participate.

Be sure to read the feis tips if attending your first one, it’ll make it a more enjoyable event!

Syllabus

Your teacher will often have the syllabus of the local feiseanna. Be sure to check the location of the hall/centre and the time you are allocated to dance at.

Hint: Generally 5 dances = 1 hour of time. However, it is your own responsibility to make it there on time, if unsure, leave early!
